Show how deep your New Orleans roots run with this new Storyville Original. In 1946, John G. Schwegmann and his two brothers launched Schwegmann Brothers Giant Super Market on St. Claude Avenue near the intersection of Elysian Fields Avenue. Over time, Schwegmann's grew to include eighteen stores with over 5,000 employees. The grocery chain introduced New Orleans to the modern super market, selling everything from shoes to Cracker Jack's. Schwegmann's closed in 1996, and joined K&B as one of New Orleans' most loved but now defunct chains. Schwegmann's will continue to live in in the hearts and minds of New Orleanians.
